Gabby Scott, the Puerto Rican record holder in the women's 400 meters at 50.97 seconds and indoor 600 meters at 1:28.30 along with the 2019 NCAA Division 1 runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles representing Colorado, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming the first female athlete in her country's history to qualify to compete in the 400 at the World Championships, with the opening round scheduled for July 17 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Scott, 25, ran a lifetime-best 50.97 seconds June 11 in Switzerland to eclipse the 2008 national record of 51.39 established by Carol Rodriguez and earn the opportunity to make her Worlds debut on American soil after attending track and field camp earlier in her career at University of Oregon and graduating from Westview High in San Diego. She revisits the decision to shift focus following last year from the 400 hurdles to the 400 meters and the belief Scott had to compete at a global level after setting Colorado program records in the indoor and outdoor 400, along with the 400 hurdles. Scott, who will race at Hayward Field for the first time since 2017, explains how significant it is to have six female athletes representing Puerto Rico at the World Championships, in addition to decathlete Ayden Owens-Delerme, the reigning NCAA Division 1 indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon champion representing Arkansas. She examines how meaningful it is to share her first World Championships experience with Tokyo 100-meter hurdles gold medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, in addition to having Paola Vazquez competing in the 100 hurdles, Grace Claxton in the 400 hurdles, Coralys Ortiz in the javelin throw, Beverly Ramos in the marathon and Rachelle de Orbeta in the 20-kilometer racewalk. Scott analyzes how she has benefited from the experiences of running the 200, 600, 800 and 400 hurdles to develop her racing strategy in the 400, along with the confidence she has gained in being able to finish the race strong. She also speaks about how instrumental her faith has been throughout her journey, especially as a professional athlete, and expresses gratitude for the support of family and friends, in addition to the genuine appreciation she has felt from Puerto Rican fans during her trips to the country to race on home soil, especially May 12 in Ponce. Scott shares how she continues to balance her track career with her passions away from the sport, including working with both women and men as a Natural Hair Consultant as founder of Curl Care Club.
