Madie Boreman, a Oiselle professional athlete and the American record holder in the 2,000-meter steeplechase and No. 20 all-time in the world at 6:09.81, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap her breakthrough 2023 season, including two indoor personal-best efforts in the mile and 3,000 meters, along with five outdoor lifetime-best performances in the 1,500 meters, mile, 5,000 meters, 2,000 steeplechase and 3,000 steeplechase. Boreman eclipsed the 2014 American record of 6:14.66 set in South Carolina by New Balance professional athlete Stephanie Garcia Cichosz on July 29 at the British Milers Club Birmingham Grand Prix in England. She also elevated to the No. 13 all-time American competitor in the 3,000 steeplechase by clocking 9:22.99 on May 26 at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Boreman revisits running a personal-best 4:27.71 in the mile Aug. 4 at the Sir Walter Miler at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., becoming the 102nd female athlete to run sub-4:30 in U.S. history, in addition to elevating to the No. 48 all-time American outdoor competitor. She also examines her 1,500-meter races July 15 and 22 in Belgium and how those performances contributed to the confidence to produce the American 2,000 steeplechase record, as well as run a 1,500 split of 4:09.83 on her way to a third-place finish at Sir Walter Miler. Boreman also analyzes the lessons learned from running 9:41.53 and finishing 11th in the 3,000 steeplechase final July 8 at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and how she hopes to use that experience as inspiration and motivation to qualify for the American roster to compete in 2024 at the Paris Olympics. She explains how valuable it has been to be coached in her first year as a professional athlete by Julie Benson, and how impactful her support and approach to training have been, especially with Boreman being sidelined by injuries on multiple occasions during her collegiate career at Colorado. Boreman also expresses gratitude to Oiselle for their support, as well as her management and family, and speaks about how excited she is for the future of the Haute Volée group that also now includes Brenna Detra, Carmen Graves and Melissa Tanaka. She also analyzes the future of the Colorado football program under first-year coach Deion Sanders, along with examining the Buffaloes moving to the Big 12 Conference at the end of the 2023-24 school year and how the Pac-12 Conference is on the verge of extinction.
