Gabby Scott, the Puerto Rican national record holder in the women's 400 meters at 50.97 and a semifinalist at last year's World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 20 in the opening round of her second global event in Budapest, Hungary. Scott, 26, is also the Puerto Rican indoor national record holder in the 600 meters and an All-American at Colorado in the 400-meter hurdles. She reflects on capturing the bronze medal in the 400 on July 6 by running 51.51 in the final at the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador. Scott reminisces about her first appearance at the CAC Games in 2018 representing Puerto Rico in the 4x400 relay, and how significant it was to return as the national record holder in the 400 and earn a bronze medal. She also shares how she was recognized in July as one of the "50 Most Interesting Athletes" and how proud Scott was of the photo shoot with photographer P.J. Davis that highlighted her authentic journey on and off the track. Scott also revisits competing in March in Puerto Rico, and how meaningful it is to race in front of family and friends. She analyzes the increased number of Puerto Rican athletes competing at the World Athletics Championships, and looks forward to racing in the future in either a mixed 4x400 relay with Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Ayden Owens-Delerme, or a women's 4x400 relay as well at a global event. Scott explains her success in being able to run rounds well during her collegiate career representing Colorado, along with professionally, and her pursuit of reaching the Aug. 23 final in Budapest, along with improving on her national record. She also shares about her ambition and inspiration for her various hairstyles during competition, especially as a Certified Natural Hair Consultant and founder of Curl Care Club. Scott examines the current state of the Colorado athletic program, especially with the recent hire of football coach Deion Sanders, and shares her perspective about the Buffaloes leaving the Pac-12 following the 2023-24 school year to return to the Big 12 Conference, part of the ongoing realignment of conference affiliations in NCAA athletics.
